The Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) is one of Greece’s largest research institutions and the research arm of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). Founded in 1989, ICCS has participated in more than 4,000 national and EU-funded projects across digital technologies, energy, automation, and environmental monitoring.

Within ICCS, the I-SENSE Group leads interdisciplinary research on Earth observation, AI, and data platforms. With over 150 researchers, it drives innovation in smart systems and operational platforms for sustainability, mobility, and crisis response.

Role in BioClima

ICCS leads Task 1.4 in BioClima, developing a cloud-native architecture for fully automated, scalable pre-processing of Earth Observation (EO) data. This system will support the seamless provision and integration of EO products for BioClima's biodiversity and climate monitoring services.

Built on the Copernicus DIAS cloud and the emerging Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem, the ICCS system will:
✅ Enable large-scale EO-based services
✅ Provide a unified API for data access and analysis
✅ Remove computational bottlenecks
✅ Support end-to-end EO data workflows for BioClima applications

The solution will offer users flexible, high-performance tools to support monitoring at local, national, and international levels.

Pilot Activities

ICCS contributes to the core digital infrastructure used across pilot sites and case studies in Europe and China. While not leading a specific geographic pilot, ICCS's cloud-based platform underpins data delivery and analysis for all BioClima test areas.
