The BioClima project recently held its first periodic review meeting, providing an important opportunity to present the progress achieved during the first reporting period, discuss ongoing activities across the project and look ahead to the next phase of implementation.

The review meeting covered progress across the project’s research and innovation activities, technological development, case studies, international cooperation, project management, communication and stakeholder engagement. It also provided an opportunity to discuss how BioClima contributes to wider European objectives related to climate change, biodiversity protection and Earth observation.

Advancing biodiversity and climate intelligence

During the first reporting period, BioClima made significant progress towards its overall goal of developing innovative approaches combining Earth observation, environmental data, advanced analytics and artificial intelligence to better understand the interactions between climate change and biodiversity.

Work is progressing on the integration of observations from multiple sources, including ground-based measurements, UAVs and satellite data. The project is also developing statistical and AI-based analytical approaches and tools to support biodiversity and climate monitoring.

An important part of this work is the development and testing of methods across BioClima’s case studies, representing different ecosystems and environmental conditions. These activities provide the practical basis for evaluating how new data-driven approaches can contribute to improved environmental monitoring, assessment and decision-making.

The review meeting also highlighted progress in the development of analytical and monitoring solutions. The project’s work includes statistical frameworks, AI analytics and approaches towards early-warning monitoring, supported by an increasing number of biodiversity-related datasets and pilot activities.

Connecting research, ecosystems and policy

BioClima is not only focused on technological development. The project also explores how scientific knowledge and research results can contribute to climate and biodiversity policies and strategies.

Research activities address the impacts of climate change on ecosystem structure and functioning using relevant biodiversity and climate variables across different case study areas. The project also investigates synergies between biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation and mitigation.

Current activities include the development of spatial optimisation approaches for blue and green infrastructure, building an evidence base for relevant features and calibrating biophysical models for forest and non-forested land use. These activities contribute to a better understanding of how scientific evidence and environmental data can support future planning and decision-making.

Through this work, BioClima aims to strengthen the connection between scientific evidence, practical case studies and policy needs, while continuing to develop and validate its methodologies in different environmental contexts.

Strengthening international collaboration

Cooperation between European and Chinese partners remains an important dimension of BioClima. Regular exchanges and joint activities support knowledge sharing, research cooperation and the development of common approaches.

Collaboration is taking place across different areas of the project, including observation systems, research methodologies and case study activities. Regular communication and planned joint activities provide opportunities to exchange experience and explore complementary approaches between the European and Chinese research teams.

At the same time, the project maintains a strong focus on responsible research, data management and ethical implementation. Relevant considerations include personal data, environmental and health aspects, international cooperation and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

Communication and stakeholder engagement

During the first reporting period, BioClima continued to develop its communication, dissemination and stakeholder engagement activities.

Project activities and developments have been shared through the BioClima website, social media channels, workshops, conferences and other outreach activities. These communication efforts help make the project’s research accessible to a wider audience and support interaction with relevant research, practitioner and stakeholder communities.

Stakeholder and policy engagement will become increasingly important as the project progresses and further research results and practical outcomes become available. Strengthening these connections will help ensure that the knowledge, methods and tools developed within BioClima can reach relevant communities and contribute to broader discussions on biodiversity and climate action.

Looking ahead

The first periodic review meeting provided an important opportunity for the consortium to take stock of the work carried out during the first reporting period, present achievements and ongoing developments across the project, and discuss priorities for the next stage of implementation.

In the coming period, BioClima will continue developing and validating its methodologies, advancing its case studies, strengthening international research cooperation and increasing engagement with stakeholders and policy communities.
